This 2005 production of Ferenc Molnár’s Liliom was presented by the Bregenzer Festspiele as an open-air theatrical event on Martinsplatz in Bregenz’s old town. Directed by Barbara Herold, making her debut at this open-air venue, the staging emphasized the work’s social critique and the stark tragedy surrounding the unemployed carnival barker Liliom and his relationship with the pregnant maid Julie. The production was created as a co-production with Theater am Kornmarkt – Vorarlberger Landestheater Bregenz. Set and costume design (Ausstattung) were by Luis Graninger. Reviews highlighted the production’s intentionally austere directorial approach, which sharpened the focus on the characters’ emotional realities.
