This production is a film adaptation of Gerald Barry's opera, created by Irish National Opera in co-production with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Originally planned for the stage, it was reimagined for film due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hugh O’Conor directed the film using Antony McDonald’s stage concept and design, preserving the toy-theatre aesthetic with sliding panels and rapid changes. Filming took place at the National Opera House, Wexford, with audio recorded at University Concert Hall, Limerick. The result is a fast, 50-minute operatic film that channels the frenetic, witty energy of Barry’s score.
