Wexford Festival Opera revived Frederick Delius’s A Village Romeo and Juliet in 2012, presenting a staging originally conceived by Teatro Lirico di Cagliari (2002). Stephen Medcalf directed, with sets and costumes by Jamie Vartan and lighting by Simon Corder. Critics praised the production’s beauty and economy of design and lighting, with Opera magazine lauding the unified stagecraft. The revival received Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards nominations for Best Opera Production and Best Set Designer, with Vartan winning the latter. Claire Seymour (Opera Today) highlighted the evocative final moments, where green-lit waters seemed to envelop the lovers. The production formed part of the festival’s exploration of rarely staged repertoire, positioning Delius’s lyrical tragedy at the heart of the season.
