Franz Kafka’s 1912 novella The Metamorphosis probes the logic of utility in modern society and how we deal with loneliness, fear, isolation, and alienation from our familiar surroundings, which can arise for many different reasons. What happens to a person who no longer conforms to social norms and expectations? Who is perceived as parasitic, despicable, or monstrous and is thus humiliated and gradually excluded from social participation? What if someone is deemed no longer useful in the eyes of society? Kafka’s iconic text raises questions that allow for a wide range of interpretations and continually challenge us to reengage with it anew.
