In the same year of his death, the Venetian composer Bruno Maderna (1920-1973) translated the pamphlet Satyricon by the Roman author Petronius into chamber opera . In the central episode of Trimalchio's Supper, Petronius scolds the debauchery of the nouveau riche in Nero's Rome by staging an immensely wealthy freedman who revels in ridiculous ostentation, gluttony and perverse pleasures. Maderna underlines the parallels between the Roman Empire and contemporary society, identifying decadence as a constant in the history of the world. The work consists of 16 unordered numbers (with possible registered inserts); the collage effect extends to music with quotations from Bizet, Gluck, Mozart, Offenbach, Strauss, Stravinsky, Verdi, Wagner and Weill.
