As a basis for his opera, Richard Strauss chose the scandalous piece »Salomé«, which Oscar Wilde had written in French for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. »Salome« was first performed in Dresden in 1905 and brought the composer his first international success. With its extraordinarily rich orchestration, the score develops from one escalation to another and reaches several culmination points, as in the famous Dance of the Seven Veils. Text and music unite in this first German literary opera to portray the overwhelming power of Eros.
