Sandeep Bhagwati’s Ramanujan was commissioned by the City of Munich and the GEMA Foundation for the 1998 Munich Biennale, which ran under the motto “Dialogue of Cultures.” The staging set Eastern and Western theatrical worlds and ways of life in deliberate collision, mirroring the biographical and inner turbulence of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The directorial concept avoided a hagiography that would reduce Ramanujan to an innocent victim of Western imperial attitudes. Instead, it critiqued the intransigence on both sides, using music as a mediating “world language” to bridge the cultural divide. The production featured stage design by Johannes Schütz, costumes by Sabine Böing, and live computer electronics developed in collaboration with IRCAM.
