This new production at the Grand Théâtre de Tours was created in the Opéra de Tours workshops in co-production with the Indre-et-Loire General Council. Alain Garichot’s staging emphasizes clarity of dramatic narrative and finely tuned direction of the three principal characters’ inner tensions. The stage is deliberately spare: a small house and a ship’s carcass form the primary space, while projections by Lionel Monier enhance atmosphere and the materiality of the settings. Scenic design (sets by Denis Fruchaud, costumes by Claude Masson) and lighting (Marc Delamézière) set the characters’ intimacy against elemental forces—the sea and the peat bog—highlighting the work’s maritime melancholy. Under Jean-Yves Ossonce, the musical direction brings out the richness and color of Ropartz’s orchestration.
