Madison Lyric Stage’s 2019 production of Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men was conceived as an immersive, site-specific experience at the 300-year-old Deacon John Grave House. Directed by Marc Deaton, performances were limited to 40 audience members to heighten intimacy and proximity to the action. The audience first encountered George and Lennie outdoors before moving inside the house: Act I unfolded in one fully air‑conditioned room and Act II in a second room, with cushioned seating arranged tightly around the playing area. The production was accompanied by piano. To deepen the environment, the company offered an “On the Farm” pre‑show with chili, cornbread, and barbershop quartet singing alongside “ranch‑hands” on the grounds.
