Max und Moritz is an amusing and lively ballet comedy based on Wilhelm Busch’s classic German children’s story. The production brings to life the iconic words, “Dieses war der erste Streich, doch der zweite folgt sogleich…”. It captures the anarchic humor of two mischievous boys who turn their village upside down, tormenting characters like Widow Bolte and Teacher Lämpel as they defy bourgeois order. Choreographed by Ferenc Barbay and Michael Kropf, with libretto and direction by Edmund Gleede, the ballet uses music by Gioachino Rossini arranged by Béla Fischer to tell the story entirely through dance. The staging resembles a moving comic book, marked by high tempo, vivid imagination, and tongue-in-cheek humor. Recommended for ages 6 and up, the production appeals to both young audiences and adults.
