When Lady Harriet Durham, a damsel of the English queen, is once again terribly bored, she comes up with the saving idea: Together with her confidant Nancy, she disguises herself as the farm maid »Martha« and promptly lets the rich tenant Plumkett buy her at the Richmond market and his foster brother Lyonel. Naturally, the noble ladies there prove to be of little use for housework - but all the more suitable for other things... Loriot's legendary production (first developed in 1986 at the Staatstheater Stuttgart) does not omit the soulful passages in Flotow's musically refined opera, which had its extremely successful premiere in Vienna in 1847. In Loriot's typical detailed interpretation, he not only makes the sentimental plot endangered by magical irony bearable, but also creates a delicate framework in stage design and costumes with his artistic skills.
