Thierry Malandain’s ballet draws inspiration from the dazzling and tragic figure of Marie Antoinette, the Austrian-born Queen of France. Originally created in 2019 for Malandain Ballet Biarritz, it premiered at the Opéra Royal at the Palace of Versailles—the venue inaugurated in 1770 for her wedding to the future Louis XVI. Malandain’s choreographic language fuses a clear, neoclassical line with echoes of historical dance and baroque gesture, all shaped within a strikingly modern aesthetic. The work portrays Marie Antoinette not only as an icon of excess, but as a complex individual—molded by her mother, the court, and the public—who ultimately falls into loneliness and melancholy.
