Marco Polo is a large-scale ballet created by Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) with the PLA General Political Department Song and Dance Troupe. With around sixty dancers and a four-act structure, the production interweaves music, sets, and costumes rooted in Chinese civilization. Directed and choreographed by Chen Weiya—associate director of the Beijing 2008 Olympic ceremonies and director of the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic ceremonies—the work features a score by Zhang Qianyi that blends Yuan Dynasty court music, Mongolian folk song, and European classical traditions. At Macerata’s Arena Sferisterio, the monumental wall was used for expansive multimedia projections of the Silk Road, deserts, and imperial halls to create an immersive environment. Scenic design is by Sun Nanpu, visual effects by Gao Guangjian, and costumes by Wu Lei and Liu Dan, with dramaturgy by Zhao Daming.
