Magnus Gabriel was heralded as Läckö Castle’s most ambitious operatic venture to date at its 2008 premiere. Commissioned specifically by the Lacko Castle Foundation, the work was created for performance in the very historical setting where Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie lived. The staging exploits the castle courtyard to fuse Daniel Börtz’s taut, charged music with Iwar Bergkwist’s text. Director Elisabet Ljungar frames the piece as a retrospective journey: it opens with an aged Magnus Gabriel in self-examination and moves backwards through memories to the splendor of his youth, shaping a dramaturgy that contrasts his impoverished final years with the heights of his earlier power.
