This vertical split enables simultaneous action and sharp visual contrasts—Rodolfo’s despair unfolds beneath as Luisa is pressured by Wurm above. The visual world is pared back and wintry, dominated by black-and-white costuming and cold tones that mirror the drama’s emotional chill. The staging narrows the focus to the intimate tragedy of Luisa and the men around her, rather than the broader social politics of Schiller’s source. Late in the production, a stark rupture appears when the rear wall lifts to reveal a white room hung with pig halves—a surreal, unsettling image that punctures the otherwise austere clarity of the winter landscape.
