This production of Jean-Paul Sartre’s “No Exit” (German translation by Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel) frames the play as a political experiment about identity, perception, and the persistence of patriarchal and authoritarian control. Inès, Estelle, and Garcin find themselves after death in a room with no exit that is staged as a laboratory of power and judgment. Director Tjana Thiessenhusen positions responsibility as an act of resistance against patriarchal structures and the resurgence of fascist ideologies. The interplay of gaze and judgment drives the drama, as a seemingly harmless room turns into a torture chamber of mutual observation. Visual design by Sarah Methner and sound design by Valentin Kleinschmidt intensify the claustrophobic atmosphere of inescapability. The production emphasizes how the characters are shaped and deformed by the gaze of others, placing Sartre’s famous dictum “Hell is other people” in a contemporary, socially critical context.
