Directed by George Yé, Mesa College Theatre Company’s production embraced a minimalist scenic design by Christina George, with wall-like pillars and a few mobile units that kept focus on the actors. In a deliberate choice, performers moved the scenery during transitions, while Derek Maclean’s tightly cued lighting sculpted atmosphere and pace. Multimedia projections prefaced scenes with brief title cards and vignettes on a rotating black wall, echoing the action and themes to come. Historical photographs of Joseph Merrick appeared during Dr. Treves’s clinical description, anchoring the story in real-world context. Staying true to the play’s tradition, the actor portraying Merrick wore no prosthetics: his condition was conveyed through sustained vocal, physical, and facial transformation. The overall effect was an intimate, actor-centered staging that prioritized storytelling clarity, rhythm, and empathy.
