The 2024 presentation of The Golem by Music of Remembrance is a newly created dance work choreographed by Donald Byrd for Spectrum Dance Theater, set to Betty Olivero’s composition “Seks Yiddishe Lider un Tantz.” Unlike MOR’s earlier Golem projects (2008 and 2015), which screened Paul Wegener’s 1920 silent film with Olivero’s score performed live, this version translates the story into a fully choreographed stage performance. Olivero’s klezmer‑inflected music interweaves Yiddish folk sources with contemporary techniques. For 2024, Byrd’s choreography unites movement and music to reimagine the cinematic narrative as a live dance work aligned with MOR’s mission of remembrance and human rights. The Golem segment concluded the “Phoenix” concert program, which also included music by Carlos Simon, Lori Laitman, and the world premiere of Sahba Aminikia’s Phoenix (with a libretto by Zara Houshmand) addressing the women’s rights struggle in Iran.
