Handel's Dramma per musica in three acts was written towards the end of 1731 and was his after Siroe and Poro third opera based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio. Metastasio, who came from Rome and was the son of a greengrocer, was the most successful librettist of his time, and his models were set to music by the most famous composers. In Ezio, he shows a hero's path from fame after battle to deep fall into dungeon for high treason to final rescue through love.
