“The soul is a terrible reality,” says Oscar Wilde, a famous and infamous author of 19th-century English literature. This is exemplified by the title character in his cult novel, Portrait of Dorian Gray, a rich, beautiful, and naive young man who desperately wants to stay beautiful and young forever that he would even sell his soul for it. And indeed, everything happens the way you want it to: its depraved, extravagant life leaves tremendous traces on its face, only on the carefully hidden youth painting made of it ... From a mystical story imbued with wild passions and raging sensuality in 1990 the composer Mátyás Várkonyi, the writer-director János Ács and Gunar Braunke produced a moving musical, which was also performed in Germany and England.
