Vasily Barkhatov's Mariinsky production uses a visual and theatrical language that is not tied to one precise historical period. The action moves between recognisable realities of the age of serfdom and those of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia, allowing Gogol's social types and satirical mechanisms to remain legible across periods. Zinovy Margolin's principal visual motif is two immense, slowly turning wheels. The road scenes carry the main dramatic and semantic weight, linking Chichikov's journey to the opera's recurring movement between living and dead, motion and stagnation, social caricature and lyric reflection. The production was nominated in seven Golden Mask categories in 2012 and won for Best Work by a Designer in Musical Theatre.
