Carl Philip von Maldeghem’s staging of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Salzburg Landestheater reframes Rostand’s classic through a contemporary, gender-conscious lens. With women cast in many of the traditionally male roles—most notably the Gascon cadets and Christian—the production recenters Roxane as an active, self-assured protagonist. The direction combines a purist visual approach with modern touches in lighting and rhythm, connecting the 17th-century tale to a present-day mindset. Rather than celebrating only swashbuckling bravado, the staging foregrounds wit, emotional honesty, and agency.
