The Opéra de Tours mounted this production of Chanson gitane during its 1952–1953 season, presenting the operetta in two acts and twelve tableaux. Conceived after the success of the song Sur la route qui va from the 1941 film Carthacalha, the work evokes a romanticized 19th‑century world. The narrative and musical structure hinge on the contrast between rigid French aristocracy and free‑spirited Romany travelers. The staging emphasized this cultural clash and its resolution through choruses, passionate duets, and exuberant gypsy dances. A major attraction in Tours in February 1953 was André Dassary as Hubert, a role he helped popularize after the 1946 Paris run at the Gaîté‑Lyrique. His association with the part and its big numbers—especially the aria L’amour qu’un jour tu m’as donné—was a key artistic draw for the production.
