Based on ETA Hoffmann's story Das Fräulein von Scuderi , Paul Hindemith and his librettist Ferdinand Lion created the three-act opera Cardillac. In the person of the title character, a goldsmith who, being obsessed, cannot part with his pieces of jewelry and kills to protect them, the opera also addresses the tension between artist and work, between external society and inner, lonely personality.
