This staging of Cavalli’s La Calisto brings to life the ancient Greek myth of the nymph Calisto, drawing on Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It explores a triple transformation with moments of seduction, cruelty, and gentle humor. The Venetian baroque adaptation intertwines the main plot with Diana’s love for a beautiful shepherd, amplifying the opera’s wit and sensuality. A key feature is the collaboration between the early music ensemble Collegium Marianum and the puppet company Buchty a loutky. Using period-informed stage design and baroque puppets, the production evokes the grand scenic machinery of Venice in 1651. The puppeteers’ refined movements mirror baroque gesture and blend with live singers and the sound of historical instruments.
