Tom Jacobson’s Bunbury, subtitled “a serious play for trivial people,” closed Diversionary Theatre’s 2006–2007 season. Directed by Esther Emery, the production explored the meta-theatrical idea of “subfictional” characters—figures who are mentioned in classic literature but never appear on stage. Nick Fouch’s streamlined set with sliding curtains enabled swift transitions across eras and texts, complemented by lily lamps echoing the protagonist’s signature prop. The staging illuminated queer subtexts in the works of Oscar Wilde and Tennessee Williams while probing the links between art, tragedy, and lived experience. Costumes by Jennifer Brawn Gittings and lighting by Christian DeAngelis supported a brisk, playful tone. The runtime was approximately two hours.
