Lucio Dalla’s 2008 staging of The Beggar’s Opera for the Teatro Comunale di Bologna relocates John Gay and Johann Christoph Pepusch’s 1728 satire to present-day Bologna. Treating the original London setting as “archaeology” for modern audiences, Dalla emphasizes the work’s social bite by mixing professional actors and classical singers and weaving in Bolognese dialect. The production alternates long spoken dialogues with short arias, deliberately softening baroque musical references to foreground theatricality and character. Italo Grassi’s adaptable, functional set supports the episodic flow, while costumes sharply delineate the motley underworld of characters. Angela Baraldi’s Mrs. Peachum in dialect anchors the local color, and Giuseppe Grazioli leads the Teatro Comunale di Bologna orchestra in service of the drama’s pace and clarity.
