Jules Massenet was fascinated by themes from antiquity – and especially by the character of Ariadne (French: Ariane), whose story he found philosophical and poetic. He found the ideal template for his setting in the libretto by the Wagnerian Catulle Mendès. With characteristically dark colors, he illuminated the fate of Ariadne, who renounces her beloved Theseus in favor of her sister and surrenders to the floods of the sea. Massenet's Ariane premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1906.
