Director Melanie Huber’s staging at the OPAL venue of Nationaltheater Mannheim is described as colorful and musically modern—ideal for newcomers, since the family opera unfolds in a concise 80 minutes without intermission. The production opens Lewis Carroll’s surreal world to both children and adults. Lena Hiebel designs the sets and costumes: from a caterpillar integrated into a mushroom to fatsuits and hand‑crocheted garments, she creates a distinctive Wonderland look. Lighting by Damian Chmielarz—particularly praised by student audiences—shapes the atmosphere. Choreographic collaboration is by Joanne Willmott, with dramaturgy by Daniel Joshua Busche. The musical forces include the Nationaltheater Orchestra, the women’s chorus, the children’s chorus, and the supernumeraries of the Nationaltheater. The production is supported by the Karin and Carl-Heinrich Esser Foundation.
