The mystery-crime-musical by the writing duo that created the successful Elisabeth is based on Daphne du Maurier’s bestseller of the same name, which has also been made into several films, including one by the Oscar-winning Alfred Hitchcock. After a brief courtship in the early 20th century, a simple young girl marries a newly widowed English nobleman, Maxim de Winter, who takes her to his Manderley estate in southern England. Most of the staff, however, still remember Maxim's deceased first wife, Rebecca, from whose shadow their new mistress cannot escape.
