Isabel Ostermann’s staging places the work in a brightly lit, white examination room. The protagonist initially sits slumped at a table, alone with memories of love’s bliss and pain. Christian Jost’s composition takes Schumann’s harmonies and melodies as seeds for a continuous sonic stream of the unconscious, played by nine instruments (including vibraphone, celesta, and harp) from the pit. Accompanied by associative visuals, the piece does not tell a chronological story but opens surprising windows into the human soul.
