Elizabeth Cree

Elizabeth Cree is a chamber opera adapted from Peter Ackroyd’s novel The Trial of Elizabeth Cree. Set in 1880s London, the production interweaves several narratives: the trial of the titular heroine for the alleged poisoning of her husband, a series of brutal murders committed by a Jack the Ripper-style killer, the spirited world of an English music hall, and guest appearances by notable Victorian luminaries. The work is a world premiere by the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell. The production combines factual history with fictional and imaginary elements, creating a highly suspenseful and theatrical experience. It was co-commissioned and co-produced in partnership with Hackney Empire and Chicago Opera Theater.
