This original chamber opera is an ambiguous fusion of historical reality and fiction, adapted from playwright Tang Xianzu’s visit to Macao (Xiang Shan Bay) in 1591. Commissioned to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Macao International Music Festival, it marked the first locally created chamber opera by Macao-based professionals. The creative team features playwright Lawrence Lei, composer Liu Chenchen, and poet-librettist Un Sio San. The work evokes an exquisitely unusual romance and the charm of old Macao, presented with poetic grace by a cast of singing virtuosos.
