Hybris is the latest creation by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella, recipients of the 2018 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. With their customary, overwhelming energy, the duo explores the ancient knot between nature and culture. The staging takes as its conceptual framework the “body without organs” evoked by Antonin Artaud—though, as they quip, in RezzaMastrella’s case the brain is also missing. The direction probes emptiness and disorientation: how can voids be filled, and might emptiness be only a point of view? On stage, orientation and the security of place are lost; humanity imitates the beast it embodies, without rancor. The result is a destabilizing, fiercely comic rite that exposes our certainties and the limits we draw around ourselves.
