Goplana

This 1949 production of Goplana inaugurated the 1949/1950 season of the State Opera and Philharmonic in Warsaw during the officially proclaimed “Słowacki Year,” marking 100 years since the death of poet Juliusz Słowacki, whose drama Balladyna inspired the libretto. Directed by Teofil Trzciński and Tadeusz Laskowski, with sets and costumes by Wacław Borowski and choreography by Stanisław Miszczyk, the staging was performed at the Scena przy Nowogrodzkiej (the Roma stage), the company’s home while Teatr Wielki remained in ruins after World War II. Under the musical direction of Zdzisław Górzyński (with Tadeusz Mazurkiewicz also conducting), the production achieved an extensive run of 44 performances beginning with its premiere on 30 December 1949.
