Sorozábal called Juan José a popular lyrical drama, explaining that "popular" meant proletarian, not folkloric. It was first heard in 2009 in San Sebastian, Spain as a concert version. It is only now, 48 years after it was composed in 1968, that the opera has its première on the stage. The story takes place in a slum area of Madrid, one of taverns and social outcasts which had appeared three decades earlier in Sorozábal's Adiós a la bohemia. In this production, stage director José Carlos Plaza immerses us in a world of misery and illiteracy.
