Kevin Puts's Pulitzer Prize–winning opera, Silent Night, returns to the Met in a new production. Inspired by the true events of the 1914 Christmas truce during World War I, the opera depicts soldiers from opposing sides spontaneously setting aside their differences to mingle, exchange gifts, and sing carols. The production, directed by James Robinson, offers an evocative staging that transports the audience directly to the battlefields of the Western Front, highlighting a poignant portrayal of shared humanity amidst inhumane circumstances. The opera, with a libretto in English, French, and German, has been critically acclaimed since its 2011 premiere.
