The 2013 production of Miss Saigon at Malmö Opera is directed by Swedish musical veteran Ronny Danielsson, working alongside choreographer Roger Lybeck. The creative team reunites visual artists from a previous successful staging of Les Misérables, with scenography by Martin Chocholousek and costumes by Annsofi Nyberg. The staging consciously departs from the original production’s visual conventions to offer a refreshed interpretation. Casting brings an international dimension: Kim is played by Li‑Tong Hsu, a Chinese-born artist raised in Holland who learned Swedish specifically for this production. She is joined by Philip Jalmelid as Chris and veteran actor Dan Ekborg, whose Engineer is warmer and laced with humor. The production emphasizes intense physical presence, large-scale ensemble sequences, and immersive surround sound that evokes the iconic helicopter scenes.
