This staging of “My Friend Bunbury” revives the classic GDR musical first premiered in 1964 at Berlin’s Metropoltheater. Based on Oscar Wilde’s celebrated social satire, the piece blends witty dialogue with catchy melodies that have become staples of the genre. The production highlights the playfulness of the double lives led by Algernon and Jack, who invent a fictional friend named Bunbury to escape their social obligations. Directed by Manuel Schöbel, the show translates Wilde’s satire of Victorian society into a lively musical language. A large performing force featuring the Elbland Philharmonie Sachsen and students from the Heinrich Schütz Conservatory Dresden underscores the regional, collaborative spirit of Landesbühnen Sachsen. The visual concept by Ines Nadler and Sabina Moncys captures the whimsical and sometimes absurd nature of the characters’ romantic entanglements.
