Malmö Opera’s production of Funny Girl is a lavish musical directed by Ronny Danielsson. The story traces Fanny Brice’s journey from a young girl in New York’s Jewish neighborhoods to becoming a Broadway star in the Ziegfeld Follies. Martin Chocholousek’s set design and Camilla Thulin’s costumes conjure a vivid period world that captures both glamour and hardship. The staging highlights the comedy and the tragedy in Fanny’s life, especially her complicated relationship with Nick Arnstein. With Sanna Nielsen in the title role, audiences hear iconic numbers like “Don’t Rain on My Parade” in a Swedish rendition. The show features extensive tap choreography by Sara Lehmann and a full opera orchestra conducted by Joakim Hallin.
