Cygnet Theatre's production of Follies inaugurates the company’s new home at The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center in Liberty Station. Directed by Artistic Director Sean Murray, the staging draws parallels between the musical’s crumbling Weismann Theatre and the real venue’s transformation from a long-shuttered Navy building. Andrew Hull’s design conjures a decaying stage with a fractured proscenium, fallen concrete, and golden footlights. Memory becomes a physical presence as younger “ghosts,” in their original glamorous costumes, shadow the aging performers. Casting emphasizes this duality by pairing veteran San Diego actors with younger lookalikes. Katie Banville’s choreography shifts the ensemble fluidly from the grounded reunion to surreal vaudevillian dreamscapes. The second act culminates in the Loveland sequence, a dazzling dream in 1920s-style vignettes, heightened by Elisa Benzoni’s costumes and Amanda Zieve’s dynamic lighting.
