Director Jeffrey B. Moss’s revival of Camelot at North Coast Repertory Theatre embraces an intimate, scaled-down approach to a traditionally lavish musical. With just eight principal adult actors, two alternating youth performers, and a four-piece ensemble (piano, reeds, cello, violin) using new orchestrations by Steve Orich, the production sheds spectacle in favor of character and emotional clarity. Marty Burnett’s single-set design, medieval hangings, and Matthew Novotny’s lighting shape the visual world, while Elisa Benzoni’s richly detailed costumes provide period texture. Large crowd scenes like the Maypole dance, jousts, and battles are omitted, focusing attention on the ideals and romantic entanglements at the core of the story. The result is a storybook atmosphere that relies on the audience’s imagination and the strength of Loewe’s score.
