About this event

This is a single-date symphonic concert in the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra Popular Concert series. Kahchun Wong conducts the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, with Keigo Mukawa as piano soloist in Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. The programme continues with Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" in Wong's arrangement. The arrangement combines Western orchestra with five traditional Chinese instrumental parts associated with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra: dizi, yangqin, huqin, pipa, and percussion. It incorporates Singaporean multicultural references, including the Malay hand drum kompang and a phrase imitating the call of the Asian koel. The arrangement preserves the original piano work's structure while integrating Chinese instruments into the orchestral texture.
