The Hungarian National Philharmonic’s traditional Holiday Concert at Müpa Budapest presents a festive choral-orchestral programme in two halves. The first half focuses on Johann Sebastian Bach with Cantatas 1 and 2 from the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), bringing jubilant yet spiritually uplifting music for four vocal soloists, choir and orchestra. After the interval, the concert turns to 19th- and 20th-century works: Robert Schumann’s Nachtlied Op. 108 for eight-part mixed choir and orchestra, and Arthur Honegger’s late three-part Une cantate de Noël H. 212 for baritone, children’s choir, mixed choir, organ and orchestra. György Vashegyi conducts the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster Csaba Somos), with the Zoltán Kodály Hungarian Choir School (choirmaster Borbála Sapszon) providing the children’s chorus. The concert is presented without staging, in the symphonic format of Müpa’s flagship hall.
