About this event

This is the established Mariusz Treliński staging of Puccini's opera, with scenery by Boris Kudlička. The production premiered at Teatr Wielki - Opera Narodowa on 29 May 1999, so the 2026 performances are a revival of an existing staging rather than a newly created production. The concept places Butterfly's love story alongside the encounter of two civilizations and a period of cultural transformation. The official description connects the action with Japan's Meiji era and presents the staging as a contemporary directorial interpretation rather than a literal historical reconstruction. Kudlička's scenography is described as minimal and free of unnecessary props and stereotyped exotic decoration. The costumes by Magdalena Tesławska and Paweł Grabarczyk are described as stylistically deliberate.
