About this event

This is a chamber recital by the Opus13 string quartet in the Kleiner Saal of the Laeiszhalle. The production is presented as a concert program rather than a staged theatrical work. The program contrasts Haydn's late-Classical G major quartet, Bartok's modernist Third Quartet, and Schubert's dramatic D minor quartet. The order is Haydn, Bartok, interval, then Schubert. Haydn is characterized by clarity, elegance, wit, invention, and refinement. Bartok's work dissolves traditional form and uses Bartok pizzicato, glissandi, percussive effects, and extreme registers. Schubert's quartet takes its nickname from his song "Der Tod und das Mädchen," whose theme is varied in the second movement.
