About this event

Lac is Jean-Christophe Maillot's ballet interpretation of the Swan Lake myth. The production is built around the opposed images of the white swan and black swan, a bird-woman, and a prince who loses himself while moving between two sides of a mirror. Maillot and writer Jean Rouaud use the ambiguities of the fable to question the relationship between animality and humanity. The production places the ballet in dialogue with myths from Greek, Nordic, and Slavic traditions and connects those myths to contemporary ideas of hybridity and the enduring theme of metamorphosis. The production credits Jean-Christophe Maillot with choreography, Ernest Pignon-Ernest with scenography, Philippe Guillotel with costumes, Jean-Christophe Maillot and Samuel Thery with lighting, and Jean-Christophe Maillot and Jean Rouaud with dramaturgy. The score is credited to Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski, with an additional composition credit for Bertrand Maillot.
