This is a contemporary-music concert for an ensemble of 18 strings, configured as four string quartets plus two double basses. The program places two new works in direct succession, with both works receiving world-premiere performances at Donaueschinger Musiktage. Rebecca Saunders's thirst addresses the challenge of writing for a homogeneous mass of strings through highly differentiated musical texture. Ann Cleare's unnamed new work approaches the same ensemble through a conceptual model drawn from the human brain and machine learning.
