This guest production by the Navoi Theatre is directed by Konstantin Kamynin. The action is relocated to Spain in the 1940s–1950s, a period shaped by the postwar attempt to rebuild social order and the growing subjection of individuals to external will. The production focuses on Carmen’s resistance to confinement: those around her impose rules and demand a choice, while she values freedom above love, duty, and life itself. Carmen’s final step is presented not as defeat but as the triumph of an unconquered spirit; Jose remains with guilt and the memory of a woman who could not be held, changed, or defeated.
