About this event

The production adapts Lars von Trier's film Melancholia as a contemporary opera. The official description centres on a decadent wedding that ends with the destruction of Earth, accompanied by the Royal Swedish Orchestra, synthesizers and operatic voices. Slava Daubnerova directs. The staging uses set design by Boris Kudlicka, costumes by Chrisi Karvonides-Dushenko, lighting by Tom Visser, video by Bartek Macias and sound design by Avgoustos Psillas. Choreography is by Charlotta Ofverholm, dramaturgy by Katarina Aronsson and chorus direction by Jori Klomp. The musical realization includes orchestral arrangements by Michael P. Atkinson and Mikael Karlsson, conducted by Andrea Molino. The 2026 production revives the Royal Swedish Opera staging first premiered there in 2023.
